Explore the peaceful mountain village of Mae Kampong

Nestled in a valley between two mountains, Chiang Mai offers a plenty of day trip opportunities by motorbike. In this post, we’ll guide you through a scenic journey to the picturesque mountain village of Mae Kampong, with stops in San Kampaeng and Doi Sakhet along the way.

Leaving the City for San Kampaeng

Begin your adventure by leaving Chiang Mai city and heading towards San Kampaeng. Along the way, consider stopping at some interesting spots, such as the Bo Sang Umbrella Village or Siam Celadon pottery. Once you’ve explored these attractions, continue driving to San Kampaeng, where you’ll find a local fresh market in the middle of the town. Take a stroll around the market to soak up the atmosphere, and then head to Chuen Cafe, which offers stunning views of the lake and mountains, as well as delicious food and drinks. You can even feed the fish in the lake!

After enjoying Chuen Cafe, get back on the road and head towards Mae Kampong. On your way, be sure to stop at Tham Mueang On, a Buddhist cave located on a hill that offers a unique cave experience and breathtaking views from the Buddhist pagoda on top of the hill. This spot is also great for a quick hike. Finally, continue driving to Mae Kampong with its beautiful scenery and interesting attractions, this route is sure to provide an unforgettable adventure.

Doi Nangmo Full Day Hiking Trip near San Kampaeng

If you enjoy the views and scenery of mountains around San Kampaeng and Chuen Cafe, then we can recommend you a beautiful and challenge hike on a mountain in this area. It’s called Doi Nang Mo (Doi is the Northern Thai word for Mountain) and it offers a beautiful trip that of around 9 kilometers, that takes around 4-5 hours.

Exploring Mae Kampong

Once in Mae Kampong, stroll around the village, enjoy the river, and grab a bite to eat. For stunning views, drive a bit further up the road to a coffee shop overlooking the village. Further more we recommend visiting the Mae Kampong Waterfall as it’s a very serene place and offers a small hike up as well, as the waterfall has many different levels which can be climbed up pretty high. There is a limited Mountain View due the surrounding jungle and trees, but further up the waterfall it’s like you have your own private oasis from a Tarzan movie.

Mae Kampong is the main attraction of this trip. So you can stay in Mae Kampong as long you like or you can explore other points of interest around this part of the Chiang Mai province.

Hot Springs and Doi Sakhet

Optionally, after your visit to Mae Kampong you can drive back to Chiang Mai via Soi Sakhet Hot Spring for some refreshment or continue your journey to Doi Sakhet Lakes and Dot Sakhet Temple for a beautiful view and sunset. Admire the temple sites and enjoy the views from this breathtaking location.
