Train Travel in Thailand
What to know before taking the train between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, from choosing a service to arriving rested.
Updated 31 August 2026
Thailand’s trains are one of the most enjoyable ways to reach Chiang Mai. The journey is slower than flying, but you see more of the country and can turn the travel day into part of the trip. Day and overnight services give the journey a completely different feel.

Day and overnight services
The overnight train is useful when you want to save a hotel night. A lower berth is usually the easiest choice for sleeping because it is wider and has a window, while an upper berth is more enclosed and often cheaper. Day trains take longer to reach Chiang Mai, but the scenery is worth the daylight hours if you would rather see the route than sleep through it.
First class is useful when a private compartment is available and privacy matters. Second class is the practical choice for most travellers. Third class is seats only and is better for shorter daytime journeys than an overnight trip. Carriage layouts vary, so check the exact service rather than relying on a class name alone.
Check the current timetable and carriage options before booking. Services and prices change, especially around Thai public holidays.
Book ahead at busy times
Reserve early for weekends, school holidays, and Songkran. Use the official State Railway of Thailand booking channels or buy tickets at a major station. Keep your passport details close by, since they may be required for a reservation. If you need two berths together, book as soon as your dates are firm rather than hoping to rearrange later.
Check the departure station in Bangkok carefully. Bangkok transport arrangements can change, and the station name matters more than the train’s destination when you are planning a taxi or airport connection.
On board overnight
Air-conditioned carriages can feel cold, while open-window seats have a very different atmosphere. Bedding, food, plug sockets and Wi-Fi vary by train and carriage class.
An overnight journey gives you time to settle in, watch the landscape change and arrive in a new part of Thailand the next morning.
Arriving in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai Railway Station is east of the Old City. From there, you can continue by songthaew, tuk-tuk, taxi, or a ride-hailing app. Agree on the destination before leaving the station and keep your accommodation address available in Thai. If you arrive early, check whether your hotel can store bags before committing to breakfast or sightseeing.
Flights, buses, and trains
Flights are useful for a short stay, a tight onward connection, or a predictable arrival. Buses give direct overnight travel from many cities. The train brings scenery, a slower rhythm, and a memorable route between central Thailand and the north.
The train is a good fit when you have flexible plans. It gives you a gentler arrival and a memorable view of the landscape between central Thailand and the north. For a full comparison with flights, buses, and driving, read the Bangkok to Chiang Mai Travel Guide.
