Mae Kampong Day Trip

A slower mountain day from Chiang Mai, with a village walk, waterfall, local food, and a route that makes the drive part of the plan.

Updated 19 October 2026

Mae Kampong is a mountain village east of Chiang Mai, with lanes beside the stream, local food, cafés, and a waterfall. You can drive there directly or turn the journey into a longer outing with stops along the way.

Plan the route

For a faster trip to Mae Kampong, take the more direct highway route. A more scenic route through San Kamphaeng gives you the option to explore other places east of Chiang Mai, including Bo Sang Umbrella Village, local pottery workshops, and Chuen Cafe. You can stop for food beside the lake on the way out or on the way back.

Tham Mueang On cave is another possible stop before reaching the village. The cave entrance involves an uphill walk, and you can also hike up the hill for a view over the surrounding valley.

Spend time in the village

Once you arrive, explore the small lanes along the stream. Wooden houses, cafés, food stalls, and guesthouses sit close together on the mountainside. You can stop for lunch or coffee in the village and continue to Mae Kampong Waterfall when you feel like a walk.

The waterfall path follows the stream through dense greenery. The amount of water varies with the season, and the village itself is just as enjoyable if you would rather linger over food and the mountain views.

Routes back to Chiang Mai

For the return, head straight to Chiang Mai or make a longer loop via San Kamphaeng Hot Springs and Doi Sakhet. You can rent a car, ride a motorbike, or ask tour guide Dechawat to take you there.

Weather and timing

Mae Kampong is in the mountains, so it is usually cooler than Chiang Mai city. Evenings can feel chilly, and the rainy season can bring wet stretches, but the weather is often pleasant. Go straight to the village whenever suits your day, or allow more time if you want to visit several places on the way. This route map shows the wider area.
