Samoeng Loop Day Trip

A practical motorbike or car route west of Chiang Mai, with mountain roads, village stops, and enough flexibility for a full day.

Updated 20 October 2026

The Samoeng Loop circles the hills west of Chiang Mai through mountain scenery, villages, viewpoints, and places to stop for food or coffee. You can drive it by motorbike or car, in either direction, and make the day as relaxed or as full of stops as you like.

The route

One way around is to travel north through Mae Rim, follow the mountain road towards Samoeng, then return via Hang Dong. The same roads make a good trip in reverse. The map below shows one version of the loop; you can open the Samoeng Loop route in Google Maps for navigation.

Places along the way

The Samoeng Forest viewpoint is a mountain-road stop with a wide view across the hills. For a short walk to another view, the Buakjun Fire Observation Tower is an optional detour. Around Samoeng and the roads on either side, you will also pass village restaurants, cafes, and other places that might tempt you to stop.

On the Hang Dong side, Elefin Farm & Cafe is a possible cafe detour where you can have a drink with mountain views and see elephants nearby. It is a separate stop, not part of every version of the loop. Other elephant experiences can also be found in this area.

Make it your own day

You can enjoy the loop simply for its winding mountain roads and changing scenery, or spend more time at viewpoints, cafes, and village stops. A car gives you an easy way to travel together; a motorbike makes the bends and open views part of the experience. The route is accessible from Chiang Mai, so there is no need to treat it like a remote expedition.
